Really beautiful。

I personally loved this book。 For such a short book, the characters are well developed。 The story line was well written, and toi flip between different time periods with ease。You get the sense of their love, but due to the time period, their inability to fully experience it。 Quick read, but well worth it。

I absolutely loved the second half of this book (the portion from Michael’s perspective)。 I found the first half to be somewhat hard to get through and a bit boring (the Ellis side of the story) but I’m so glad I pushed through and didn’t give up — the second half of the book turned the entire thing around for me and was truly worth it。

i’ve always loved the way they loved

the AIDS crisis is one of those topics that instantly makes me cry, however, I never felt particularly connected to this novel

4。5 stars Came across this gem at the local Dollar Tree out of all places, took it home because of the gorgeous cover and because it was only $1。 What a gem this turned out to be。 Beautifully written, sad, and full of love。 I ended up going back to the Dollar Tree and bought the remaining copies to tuck into a few Little Free Libraries in the area so more people can enjoy it。

I liked the writing but wasn’t compelled by the story。

It took me a few pages to settle into the writing style - no speech marks - but once I had, the story flowed, and I quickly warmed to the characters。 This is such a heart-warming, tender, and moving novel, which moved me to tears in places。 Ellis and Michael are inseparable friends in childhood; then, things shift in adulthood with the arrival of Annie。 A beautiful and quick read - I will seek the other novels by this author, now。

4。5 stars! What a beautifully sad story。。。 The story dances around different times in Ellis and Michael’s lives, starting with Dora, Ellis’ mother, continues to a very lonely middle-aged Ellis mourning the loss of his wife Annie whilst remembering moments from his own childhood, adolescence and life in general。 Ellis and Michael meet when they were little boys。 Ellis’ mother Dora inspired both their lives through her attitude, her hopes and her replica of Van Gogh’s sunflowers。 Ellis and Michael 4。5 stars! Quick, easy read。 Both tragic and happy/heartwarming story about love and friendship。

A delicate, beautifully written, small novel that depicts how love can be both so joyous and so sad。

Easy to read, sad, reminded me of Call me by your Name。

Her words are the second attraction in this book, first is the story itself。 And amidst the love, loss and friendship as portrayed in this, we all too stand in a sunflower garden waiting to get a close understanding of life that turned out worthless without the one we once loved in it。

bonito demais, e com uma escrita belíssima。 a estrutura desconexa deixa você meio perdido no início, mas tudo se amarra muito bem no final。 curto, mas precioso。

This was truly, truly lovely。 With a sparse narration, untold details taking as much space as the ones narrated in detail, it's unfocused but precise。 Above all, I think, it's about how our ties to people (romantic or platonic or sort of neither) shape, improve, fill up our life。 The relationship at the heart of the story, Ellis and Michael and Annie, is deeply human and feels real though its boundaries are never really defined。I drank this novel up; what I appreciated the most about it was its This was truly, truly lovely。 With a sparse narration, untold details taking as much space as the ones narrated in detail, it's unfocused but precise。 Above all, I think, it's about how our ties to people (romantic or platonic or sort of neither) shape, improve, fill up our life。 The relationship at the heart of the story, Ellis and Michael and Annie, is deeply human and feels real though its boundaries are never really defined。I drank this novel up; what I appreciated the most about it was its way of telling tragedy in an almost matter-of-fact, understated, unsentimental way, but the prose was anything but cold; in fact the novel is imbued in warmth and art and the colour yellow, and for a novel with features dying young men and so much loss it felt strangely hopeful。I'd never really read anything that managed to be this tender without any sentimentality, and I will carry this book in my heart for a long time。 It's one of those novel that make you go, uh, being alive on this earth is very odd, and sort of tragic, but isn't it beautiful too? 。。。more

This book was just a gem。 Haunting, filled with love and grief, regret and healing。 It took me by surprise and I highly recommend it。

A beautiful love story - love between a man and a man, a man and a woman, a parent and a child, a foster parent and a child, neighbours, strangers, people in the same set of circumstances and love of self。 Not a romance or cheesy love story but a honest deep in your soul love story。 Aptly named because the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz sought a heart and whether she chose that deliberately, Sarah Winman, not only gives us a heart but two and they are laid bare。 In the novel, there are several allu A beautiful love story - love between a man and a man, a man and a woman, a parent and a child, a foster parent and a child, neighbours, strangers, people in the same set of circumstances and love of self。 Not a romance or cheesy love story but a honest deep in your soul love story。 Aptly named because the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz sought a heart and whether she chose that deliberately, Sarah Winman, not only gives us a heart but two and they are laid bare。 In the novel, there are several allusions to Van Gogh’s painting, Vase with Twelve Sunflowers。 I think there are several reasons for this, the connection to France, the tendency for sunflowers to turn to face the sun, the floriography of sunflowers symbolizing adoration, and maybe the close friendship of Van Gogh and Gauguin, who Van Gogh reportedly painted this particular painting for, is representative of Michael and Ellis’ friendship。 And maybe it is not for us to know but simply admire the rich layers of this sparse novel。Author Matt Haig says “[b]reaks your heart and warms it all at once” - no better way to describe this book。 Loved her novel, When God was a Rabbit and this equally well written and moving。 One that sticks with you。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 What a lovely book about friendship, longing and loss。 Whilst at times the lack of chronology made it a little confusing, it was worth it! I really liked Annie’s character but was a bit curious about her death。 I’m sure the inevitable second read will clear bits I’ve probably missed up - and it doesn’t take anything away from the story! Would have liked to know more about Carol and Len though, and Len’s relationship with Ellis。

I absolutely loved this book。 It was so beautifully written。 The nostalgia, grief, love, and youth were all portrayed so accurately。 It’s a book that leaves a cry lodged in your throat from the first page。 This is what I wanted RWRB to be。

I found this a slow book。 I liked how it explored a bisexual relationship through the years between two men and a woman, it was very moving。 Especially the loss when one man gets married to the woman, then later the married man loses his male companion and his wife, and we experience his grief。

A lonely man, seeping loss, can’t move on from his wife’s death。 Having only a job he dislikes as a focus in his life, he alienates even his workmates。 At night he recalls his mother and the fake Van Gogh painting that saved her life, the same painting, the same mother, that saved the life of his best friend, the same best friend who became his lover。 With emphasis on simplicity in the complex, Sarah Winman has beautifully balanced a love triangle。 This book is tragic and warm, reminiscent of Pa A lonely man, seeping loss, can’t move on from his wife’s death。 Having only a job he dislikes as a focus in his life, he alienates even his workmates。 At night he recalls his mother and the fake Van Gogh painting that saved her life, the same painting, the same mother, that saved the life of his best friend, the same best friend who became his lover。 With emphasis on simplicity in the complex, Sarah Winman has beautifully balanced a love triangle。 This book is tragic and warm, reminiscent of Patrick Gale – and the ending hits every note。 。。。more

Beautiful。 Just beautiful。 Strangely reminiscent of 'Normal People' by Sally Rooney, but gay and all around Europe。 Such wonderful writing by Winman, with a pretty moral and such nice characters。 10/10 recommend。 Beautiful。 Just beautiful。 Strangely reminiscent of 'Normal People' by Sally Rooney, but gay and all around Europe。 Such wonderful writing by Winman, with a pretty moral and such nice characters。 10/10 recommend。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 The story of Ellis and Michael is sad, but happy all at the same time。 Through this book you are taken along the struggles of both main characters and see how a painting that Ellis mother got in a raffle changed each of there lives。 It’s a story of death, friendship, and love。 It’s a must read。 The only thing I wanted more of this book was the relationship between the characters。 You get them separately, but never a full story of them together just snippets of there lives。
